Words in illustrative material presented within the main body of the text should be included in the word count counted manually if necessary. Illustrative materials, drawings, maps, photographs, computer print-out, etc. Wherever practicable such illustrative matter should have a binding margin of at least 40 mm and, if possible, be bound in the Dissertation near the appropriate text.

Material that cannot conveniently be bound in the Dissertation should be included in a pocket inside the back cover. Photo-reduced tables and charts may be included in the Dissertation provided that the photo-reduced copies are of good quality and in a form consistent with the need for clarity and legibility. The use of adhesives, glues and adhesive tape should be avoided if at all possible but, if their use cannot be avoided, students should ensure that the type used is selected from those specialist products available that give permanent adhesion without affecting the quality of the insertion.

Students may wish to acknowledge the part their Supervisor has played in assisting them in the preparation of the Dissertation, as well as others such as family members who have helped in the production of the Dissertation.

A cover sheet must be integrated as the first page of the redacted version with a statement on the redactions agreed by the candidate, supervisors and any industrial sponsors. The version for examination will contain the full text, even if a partial deferment has been granted. These should be single-sided. At the top of the title page, within the margins, the dissertation should give the title and, if necessary, sub-title and volume number. If the dissertation is in a language other than English, the title must be given in that language and in English.

The full name of the author should be in the centre of the page. The word count of the dissertation text only should be entered at the bottom right-hand side of the page. Each copy must include an abstract or summary of the dissertation in not more than words, on one side of A4, which should be single-spaced in a font size in the range 10 to If the dissertation is in a language other than English, an abstract in that language and an abstract in English must be included.

Students must sign the examination copies but should only print their name in the final version that they electronically submit so that no personal signifiers are shown in the online release of the dissertation. The table of contents must list, with page numbers, all chapters, sections and subsections, the list of references, bibliography, list of abbreviations and appendices.
